Reflections on a Decade

2000 - 2009 contained an untold number of ups and downs for me. The start of the decade was the start of my post-college life. Since then, my life has take quite a few twists and turns to eventually lead me to my current state. I would be remiss to not take a moment to think about some of the more impactful events or milestones during that time. So here goes (in no particular order):
  • Got my first job at a law firm...left after a year and a half
  • Became an EMT and worked on an ambulance for approximately one year
  • Was best man in my brother's wedding and three of my best friends' weddings
  • Was a groomsman in two of my dearest friends' and cousin's wedding
  • Saw many many many more of my friends get married
  • DJ'd many of those weddings
  • Saw many of my friends have children
  • Got my second law firm job...left after three years
  • Took the LSAT twice...and didn't really score that well
  • My niece, nephew and godson were born...all of who hold a very dear place in my heart
  • Joined a fantastic church
  • Started a blog
  • My uncle and grandfather died
  • Bought a house
  • Did a "Do"-athlon
  • Saw the Lakers win four Championships
  • Made a number of friends (some through work and some outside of work) who have blessed and enriched my life overwhelmingly more so than I could have ever imagined
  • Saw airplanes flown into buildings and witnessed a country both unite and spew hatred all in the name of patriotism
  • Saw two wars begin that have yet to end
  • Read a bunch of books about those wars
  • Saw the first black president elected...and cried tears of joy
  • Started the best job I have ever had and worked harder than I have ever worked
  • Joined Facebook and re-connected with friends I thought I would never hear from again
  • My mom and dad retired and proceeded to be busier than they were when they had jobs
  • Saw a bunch of movies
  • Bought and listened to a bunch of music
  • Went to a bunch of concerts
  • Went to a bunch of sporting events
  • Played a bunch of hockey
  • Gained a bunch of weight
  • Lost a bunch of weight
  • Poured a bunch (A BUNCH) of money into two different cars
  • Watched a bunch of "heroes" fall
  • Watched a bunch of true heroes rise
  • Made a bunch of mistakes and some occasional good choices
  • Tried to ask myself as often as I could, "What would Jesus do?"
  • Tried to do what Jesus would have done as often as I could...failed and succeeded

There were times during the past ten years that I felt like my life was a waste. There were times when I was very depressed. There were times when I was very happy. When I look back today on these past ten years, I am happy that I went through what I did and survived. I know that God had his hand on me all the way through and I am deeply grateful for his love, compassion and grace. I am so grateful for my friends and family who have showed me so much love and given me so much support. I look back at the last ten years and all I can say is that I am blessed.

I hope that my friends and family can do the same. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

A good quote for my 34th birthday

"God does not wait for us to become perfect and in possession of only high, pure thoughts and unmixed motives before [moving] through us. [God] waits only for the sign of faith."

-Eugenia Price, American novelist and community activist (1916-1996)

I am challenged every day to live in this truth. As I begin my 35th year, I hope and pray that God sees signs of faith in me and moves through me. Amen.
